What is Tinnitus?
“Tinnitus is the perception of sound when no actual external sound is present” *(American Tinnitus Association).
It is commonly referred to as “ringing in the ears”. Tinnitus can manifest many different perception of sound, including buzzing, hissing, whistling, swooshing and clicking.
Tinnitus can range from very low frequency to very high frequency, consist of multiple tones or noises (having no tonal quality at all). It most often is constant. It can be perceived as pulsed or intermittent and it may begin suddenly or come gradually. It can be sensed in one ear/both ears or in the head.
Tinnitus may be the cause or can be associated with wide range of problems including hearing loss, sleep difficulty, fatigue, difficult in concentrating, depression and irritability. Quality of life disturbance including social interaction and work. There is no cure for
Tinnitus, but it symptoms can be managed.
For a sound to be perceived, regions specific to that frequency in the auditory system must fire together i.e., they have to fire synchronously. However, synchronous firing that occurs without any external sound can be regarded as pathological. This manifests itself as Tinnitus. Research has quoted many formal definitions given by various authors and groups. Here are some of them.
- Tinnitus is defined by ANSI (American National Standard Institute) as “the sensation of sound without external stimulation”.
- CIBA symposium defined tinnitus as “the sensation of sound not brought about by simultaneously applied mechano-acoustic or electric signals” while Berrios et al., defined it as a formless hallucination.
One in seven people worldwide are suffering from tinnitus. 5 to 10% of people experience mild tinnitus at some time in their life. Various studies show that 50% of those with tinnitus are over the age of 40, 60% experience poor sleep and 50% face a reduced quality of life.
About 3 million people in UK experience severe and persistent tinnitus that affects their lifestyle.
20 million people in USA struggle with burdensome chronic tinnitus, while 2 million have extreme and debilitating tinnitus.

THD is a combination of CMT, CMN, CMM
- Composite Modulated Tones (CMT)
- Composite Modulated Noise (CMN)
- Composite Modulated Music (CMM)
CMT is a well-established technology for tinnitus management. It works on the principle of reducing pathologically enhanced neural synchrony within the primary auditory cortex through acoustic delivery of a combination of tones centred on your tinnitus’ Characteristic Frequency. These algorithms, over time, help to unlearn the perception of tinnitus through the process of adaptation and relaxation.
Neural Plasticity: The ability of the brain to be remoulded. Using sound to retrain the Brain. Participants’ brains will be trained to identify & discriminate between the pitch of their Tinnitus symptoms & pitches close to it.
Masking noise is one of the oldest and widely researched methods of tackling tinnitus. Tailored noise brings ‘masking noise’ as a treatment option at your ease. It dynamically generates coloured noise according to the frequency/amplitude spectrum sketched for you by your Audiologist/ Health Care Practitioner.
The Easy listening module provides you with a range of pre-installed soundtracks that help you drift your mind away from the buzzing in your ear and dodge any negative thoughts and stress associated with the same.
The music used is chosen by the Examiner but has the tones of the users tinnitus symptoms filtered out. Again, the goal is to get the participant to recognize and use the tones close to the frequency of their Tinnitus symptoms. Learning to hear & use these tones will help the “FILL IN THE GAPS” and eventually mobilise to to overtake the tinnitus tone . This is the essence of Neural Plasticity
